Original Medicare is government-backed insurance provided to retired seniors and/or disabled Americans. Original Medicare covers your regular doctor expense (check-ups, flu shots, etc.) under Part B, and it also covers your hospital stay under Part A. However, many people find that Original Medicare doesn't provide enough coverage. If you would like to know more about how to improve your Medicare coverage, keep reading.

1. Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage includes all the services provided in Original Medicare, but it also includes some important services that are excluded from Original Medicare. These include hearing, vision, dental, and wellness programs. Most Medicare Advantage plans also have prescription medication coverage. Naturally, you will need to pay an extra fee for Medicare Advantage on top of your Part B premium.

2. Medicaid

You can sign up for Medicaid alone or in conjunction with Medicare. However, the guidelines for qualifying for Medicaid are stricter than the qualifying guidelines for Medicare. Typically, to qualify for Medicaid, you need to meet certain low-income financial criteria. Medicaid is often a much more affordable option, with some patients paying little to nothing out-of-pocket.

If you also qualify for Medicare, you can choose to have Medicare and Medicaid. In fact, this may be the best choice (if you qualify for both). If you can't afford a bill related to Medicare, your Medicaid plan may cover it. Similarly, your Medicare may cover more services than your Medicaid plan.

3. Medigap

Finally, if you have Medicare and you want to take it to the next step, it's time to consider Medigap policies. These types of policies are sold from private insurance lenders, and there are many from which to choose. Some plans are designed to help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs associated with Medicare, such as coinsurance and copays.

Other plans offer additional services, such as travel health insurance. You will need to pay the premium for the Medigap policy, but it can save you money in the long run, especially if you use your insurance a lot. Some also put an out-of-pocket limit on how much you have to spend on your medical bills.

Original Medicare is a helpful tool for older Americans and those with disabilities. However, Original Medicare often lacks in services, such as vision and hearing, which are important services for older Americans who are at a higher risk of vision and hearing problems.
